Genioplasty or mentoplasty is the procedure in Cosmetic Surgery performed to modify and improve the shape of the chin. It forms part of the surgery to the facial outline, together with the correction to the nose. Sometimes, an excessive protrusion is to be found, or an undesired shape or lack of volume. There exists a frequent association between a prominent nose and an underdeveloped chin, producing an irregular facial profile. In the cases of a prominent chin, this is shortened by the sliding of a section of the bone backwards. If the chin is too wide in a vertical sense, it is then reduced by the removal of a horizontal layer of bone.
